Maggie, the owner of the restaurant the Sultan in Chengdu, accepted to answer some questions and to introduce herself and her restaurant.

MS: 28 years old, female, restaurant owner.
MB: What do you do in Chengdu?
MS: I’m a restaurant owner of a Turkish & Middle Eastern restaurant, which I opened 3 years ago. The name of the restaurant is The Sultan.
MB: What did you do before opening this restaurant?
MS: I was doing marketing in Benq and I was in charge of the whole southwest area (Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Chongqing provinces).
MB: Why did you come to Chengdu?
MS: I came to Chengdu in year 2000 to study at the Sichuan University. During my four university years I met a lot of interesting people and I saw the city change. After those years I was deeply in love with this amazing city and I believed that Chengdu would grow much faster than any other city in China, so after my graduation I decided to stay and make my life here.
MB: How did you start your business?
MS: I started it with two partners. One of them is from Australia and the other one is from Sri Lanka. Our chef is chinese and he is very talented. He makes great naan bread. Numerous customers have told us that his naan bread is the best naan bread in the whole Chengdu. He has a few years of experience working together with a Turkish chef in 5 star hotels and restaurants.
MB: Who are your customers?
MS: We have some chinese customers who like to tickle their palates with new flavours, but 80% of our customers are foreigners and expats located in Chengdu. We are the only Turkish and Middle Eastern restaurant in Chengdu and we use halal meet in many dishes which attracts customers from the muslim community.
MB: What kind of services and products do you propose to the customers?
MS: We offer a Turkish and Middle Eastern cuisine, such as hummus, falafel, kebab, homemade yogurt (delicious according to several opinions) and Turkish naan bread. All our waitering staff speaks english and the menu is also available in english. We also do delivery and catering.
Besides the exotic cooking, the customers can enjoy smoking the traditional Middle Eastern Sheesha in the restaurant.
