David the owner of the O gallery has accepted to answer to some of our questions to present his Art gallery.
Maxxelli-blog: When did the O gallery open?
David: We opened in January of 2009 to provide fine western art to the people of Chengdu.
Maxxelli-blog: Why did you open the O gallery?
David: Today there are many galleries here, but none of them were offering any western art. I know that we as foreigners really enjoy eastern art and that a lot of Chinese really enjoy western art but did not have it available. So we opened this gallery to fill that need. Since opening, we have had several events at our current location in the Lippo Tower.
Maxxelli-blog:Where are the artists from?
David: We have featured many famous artists from the west along with traditional chinese art, jade works, and most recently, talented young Sichuan artists. We have had partnerships with many local artists and a couple of the fine art schools in Sichuan province.
Maxxelli-blog:Who comes to the event?
David: During those events, we have had several hundred people come to view the art and the majority of our customers have been Chinese. They seem to really enjoy the western art we have on display, often because it is their first time to see this type of art in person. Of course, many expats live here to learn about a new culture so naturally they have also shown a lot of interest in the Chinese art that we have made available during our various exhibitions.
Maxxelli-blog: What kind of services do you offer?
David: We have very good relationships with many artists and art galleries abroad so we are able to import whatever art someone may need. We can make available art by world-class artists that has never before been seen in China. This offers buyers a unique opportunity and they don’t have to deal with all the customs, taxes and other issues that go along with importing something.
Maxxelli-blog:When is the next event, and what will it be about?
David: During the month of September we will be having a special event entitled “The Art of James”. We will present several works by American artist James Henry done in various styles. He has created a body of work with pencil sketches, watercolors and oil paintings. He is an artist with many and varied influences, but his abstract and realist paintings are all amazing. On September 18th, everyone will have an opportunity to watch him paint here in our gallery. Throughout the day, he will be working on this painting, explaining his technique and details about his style. We hope you don’t miss this opportunity to watch him create something wonderful.
