Xinhua News Agency reports that 593,832 foreigners were living on the Chinese mainland at the end of 2010, according to data from the sixth national census released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday.

The top three home countries of the foreigners were the Republic of Korea, the United States and Japan.

Among the foreigners living on the Chinese mainland, 56.62 percent were males and 43.38 percent were females.

This is the first time foreigners were surveyed in a Chinese census. Foreigners visiting China on short-term business or sight-seeing trips were not included in the census.
