The ancient city Xi’an is already attracting a lot of Western travelers due to the historical sites. Most of these tourists come from the United States and Europe, according to the Xi’an tourism authority.
Despite this, Xi’an is hoping on growing foreign investment to attract more inbound tourists. Inbound tourists are tourists who travel to a different country than that in which they have their usual residence, but outside their usual environment.
Xi’an is the capital city of the Shaanxi province and is locating more than 80% of foreign investments in the whole province. The government is promoting a “go-west” campaign to attract more foreign companies. The city is also focusing on new facilities to support meetings, incentives, conferencing and exhibitions.
For example, Samsung group have invested $7 billion to open a new factory in Xi’an, this is the largest single investment from a foreign company in China. The factory will be operational in the middle of 2013.
Kang Lifeng, deputy director of Xi’an tourism administration expects more business travelers in 2013 because the whole province wants to attract foreign investment and enterprises.
