Youku has almost the same design and presentation as Youtube, excepted that the website is exclusively in Chinese. This very simple tutorial helps you to use Youku to watch your favorite videos.

Step 1: Use the research bar.

In the search bar (circled in green in the picture), write what you are looking for.

In our example, we are looking for the TV show Lost.

Step 2: Understanding the results.

The first line is the season number

The second line is the episode number

Step 3: Watch your video.

Just click on what you want and enjoy!

The problem with recharging your phone with this kind of card is that the English instructions aren’t very clear.

Follow these instructions on how to add credit with a pre-paid card. Don’t try to understand what is being said…just follow these instructions:

1. Purchase a China Mobile pre-paid recharge card

2. Scratch off the coat to get the PIN number

3. Dial 13800138000

4. The automated service will begin. Press 2 for English, then press 2, then press 1#, and then 1 to confirm.

5. You will now be prompted for the PIN number which is the scratched off bit on your card. After entering it hit the # key.

6. It will say something like ‘wait a minute’ before it confirms that your card is now charged and ready to go.

That’s it. At any time you can send “YE” to 10086 and find out how much credit you have left on your phone. Normally you’ll get 1-2 txt messages a day warning you before it’s over as well. If you’re expecting important calls it’s noteworthy to not let it expire as people won’t be able to call you if you don’t recharge the card.

For a foreigner, marrying a Chinese person is no longer a puzzle any more, especially, in international metropolis cities like Chongqing and Chengdu. However, being a reckless bride or groom is definitely unwise unless you are sure to shoulder certain responsibilities and obligations since the date of your marriage. Therefore, having some basic knowledge regarding Chinese marriage law is helpful.

First of all, making sure you are single and older than 22 if you are male or 20 if you are female, before you decide to get married in China. And you are not supposed to be the close relative of your soon to be bride or groom.

Getting married in China can be easy, if you really think it’s time to do so: appearing together for registration at the relevant authority (usually, the civil affair department) with the required certificates and documents. You should present a certification certifying that you do not have a spouse at the time of marriage, which shall be issued by a notary institution or competent governmental authority in the state of your origin and be authenticated by the Chinese embassy or consulate in that state.

From the date of your marriage, you are “half Chinese”, as some people usually say. You enjoy rights hereafter, and you hold responsibility at the same time. Briefly, they are as following:

Right of Equality: Husband and wife have equal status in the family. Both husband and wife have the right to use his or her own surname and given name, and have the freedom to engage in production and other work, to study and to participate in social activities. And either husband or wife has the power to dispose of the community property for their daily needs of life without having to obtain the consent of the other, but on the other hand, the couple shall have to, through consultation, reach an agreement on significant disposition of the community property for non-daily needs of life.

Duty of loyalty: One spouse owes a duty of loyalty to the other. A serious breach of this duty, for instance bigamy and cohabitation with any third party, will entitle the other to claim damages upon divorce. Damages are generally granted by courts to compensate the emotional distress and material losses suffered by the non-breaching spouse.

Duty to Support: Husband and wife have the duty to maintain each other. If one party fails to perform this duty, the party in need of maintenance shall have the right to demand maintenance payments from the other party.

Right of Succession: Upon decease of one spouse, the surviving spouse has the right to inherit the properties of the decedent spouse at the time of death.

In China, one of the most important principle about marriage is that all the assets gained before marriage are individual property, and all the income gained after marriage are community property if there is no marital property agreement stipulates otherwise. Therefore, a couple may enter into an agreement in writing providing that properties acquired during or prior to marriage are separately owned by each, or concurrently owned by both, in each case, in part or in whole. In absence of such agreement, properties shall be owned by spouses according to statutory rules.

May you always have everything you wish for a rich life together!

As an expat you are most likely to face the problem of having to use a Chinese toilet once in a while (This is also called a squat toilet). Although you can find a lot normal toilets in most hotels, the 5-star public toilets in Chongqing or other western focused places. You still might want to prepare yourself for the inevitable, so here are some tips.

In most cases the right way to face is the way where the door is. Standing with your feet placed on the left and right side of the toilet

First bend down as on the picture and pull down your pants and underwear until there under your knees, as it might be hard to get into the squat position if you do it otherwise.

Watch out for splashing water as it might hit your clothes. You can avoid this by bending more towards the toilet and decreasing the distance between you and the water.

If there is a garbage bin next to the toilet which is filled with some toilet paper in most cases, you might want to throw yours in there as well if you don’t have any intentions in clogging the toilet.

Be aware that in a lot of cases there is no toilet paper in the toilet. First check if there is, if not there should be some in the restroom. If this is not the case they might not have it as people tend to take it along with them, it is wise to bring your own along as well. In the worst cases you can ask someone else if he can spare some.

What kind of fapiaos exist?

Fapiao is the receipt for buying goods, services and other sales. There are three kind’s fapiaos: common tax fapiao, value-added tax fapiao ; specialty tax fapiao. We normally use common tax fapiao, ie: taxi fapiao, air-ticket, bus ticket, food fapiao, etc.

How does it work?

When you buy goods, services and other sales, you can request to the seller to give you a fapiao.

Why did the government create this fapiao system?

In China, a lot of sales are cash sales, making it very difficult for the government to track the taxes, so they created the fapiao system.

How the scratch game works? How much can we earn?

The fapiaos of entertainment have scratch games. It is in the bottom right corner. You can scratch it, there have different prize: non-prize, 5 yuan, 10 yuan, 20 yuan, 50 yuan, 100 yuan, etc.

How does the lottery games work? How much can you win?

The fapiaos of entertainment have second prize – lottery prize. You can check the lottery prize detail on website: http://www.cdlocaltax.chengdu.gov.cn/CMS/template.go?_template=1461

What can we do if a restaurant refuses to give you a fapiao or wants you to pay for it? Is there a phone number you can call?

Some restaurants instead of wanting to go through the legal process of paying taxes (20% of the amount spent) will offer you free gifts to settle the fapiao situation. If you request for a fapiao, but they keep on refusing you one, you can call 12315 (the hotline of Customer Guarantee Center) for Chengdu.

Riding a Motorcycle in Chengdu

The most important thing when considering driving any vehicle in China is getting a Chinese Driver’s License (International ones don’t mean anything); there are separate ones for cars and motorcycles.
If you are in an accident and injure someone, having a Chinese Drivers’ License helps prevent jail time and/or deportation, without it…well, use your imagination.

Now that you have your license, it’s time to buy a motorcycle (hereafter referred to as ‘bike’). The best bet is buying a new one. New ones have all the paperwork and are easy to register. New bikes are also less likely to fall apart or break in half and you know the breaks and engine are OK. Most Chinese bikes, however, are under 150cc engine size (herein referred to as ‘Little Bikes’) so to get something bigger, you’ll need a lot of cash to buy a new one so buying used may be best. In either case, if you’re buying big, you’ll be buying an imported bike—the biggest Chinese bikes are 250cc and not very popular. Keep in mind motorcycles are NOT allowed on any freeway in China so if you buy a Ducati, you’ll only be able to use the first couple gears. Some might consider this a waste, but anybody looks good on such a bike so if you’re needing to compensate, feel free to indulge…please put us in your will.

The next thing to consider is the plates and registration: Used bikes are very difficult to register and bikes above 150cc (herein referred to as ‘Real Bikes’) can’t be registered in Chengdu (unless it’s brand new). New bikes have all the paperwork; most second-hand bikes do not. Some second-hand bikes have real plates and some have fake plates. Some sellers will tell you the fake ones are fake and some will tell you the fake ones are real. 95% of Real Bike’s plates are fake; most sellers are reluctant to sell a Little Bike with real plates to a foreigner since, in their eyes, a foreigner doesn’t need the legality of real plates.
The police know Real Bikes are difficult (if not impossible) to register (and catch) so they tend to ignore them.

The last thing (and reason there aren’t many bikes within city limits) to consider is the ‘ruchengzheng’ (enter-city-permit). Any motorcycle within the 3rd ring road needs to have a ruchengzheng. The government stopped issuing these permits so the only way to get one is to buy one 2nd hand from someone who already has one. For a Little Bike, these cost a couple thousand and higher. For Real Bikes, this permit can easily cost over RMB 10,000! The good news is that the fine for not having the permit is only a couple hundred yuan; the bad news is that if you have fake plates AND no permit, your bike will likely be taken away…If you add no driver’s license to that situation and you should expect some jail time and a lot of fees. Most foreigners and Chinese with Real Bikes have fake plates and do not have the ruchengzheng. This is risky, but fairly inevitable unless you have a lot of cash to buy new.

Wear a helmet, drive safe, and follow as many rules as you can!

Magazines

Based in Hangzhou, MORE magazines are published by Hangzhou Passion Advertising Company. MORE Hangzhou was established in December of 2004, MORE Suzhou in October 2007, and MORE Chengdu in April 2008. It is the longest running, most popular & most widespread English Magazine in Chengdu. Monthly issued with a strict deadline, it has been highly successful in hitting this target through careful hands-on selection of points of distribution (>300 venues in Chengdu), with a focus on international companies (Forbes 500), high class hotels and well-known restaurants/ bars.
The mission of MORE magazines, is to provide English speaking people living in Hangzhou, Suzhou and Chengdu and those traveling to these cities an insight to events and venues of interest within these cities. The core of the magazines is based around two areas: our extensive database of all interesting venues of which a selection, chosen by the editor, are listed each month in the magazines, and our ability to attract venues to advise us of up and coming events, whether they be theatre shows, product promotional parties, special entertainment events etc.

Online Opportunities

MORE Hangzhou website www.morehangzhou.com was established in January 2007, and its traffic has increased ever since. Our aim is to make the website a core community portal for all English speaking visitors and local expatriates. We have a skilled team working on the site every day, adding content and making the site more accessible to search engines. The work has paid off – for many Hangzhou related searches we are now on the first page, often within the top 5 on Google. In this way we promote Hangzhou, and our advertisers to an audience outside of Hangzhou. We send weekly events email to thousands people on every Thursday, which lists all events in Hangzhou. This is a free service we offer to our venues and our readers. There are also 3 banner slots available for companies to highlight their products or event.
