Wedged between the Yellow and Bohai Seas on the southernmost point of the Liaodong Peninsula, Dalian is a crucial port city of China. As China’s northern ice-free harbor, Dalian has been the envy for many other cities. With beautiful scenery, nice environment and fast development, this romantic city ranks among China’s best tourism destinations in many people’s hearts. Our reporter Yang Yang has more.

“I think Dalian is a very nice city. Even for people from Europe, there are not so many differences to their home. It’s a very good start to enjoy China.”

“It’s a very nice place. It’s amazing here.”

“I’ve been to many cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. But my favorite is Dalian. My first impression is how clean and beautiful it is.”

“I like this place very much and I want to come back again.”

Visitors from all over the world are eager to express their love for Dalian. As “China’s Best Tourist City”, awarded by the National Tourism Administration and the United Nations World Tourism Organization, this northern pearl of China has its own advantages in developing its tourism industry. Xia Deren, Mayor of Dalian, made three points.

“The advantages of developing tourism in Dalian are as follows: the first point is Dalian’s beautiful natural scenery; the second is its precious historical sites and the third is the great economic and living environment it provides.”

People call Dalian a beauty by birth because its natural sceneries are quite fascinating and unique. Located in southern cusp of Liaodong Peninsula, Dalian’s coastline is different from the gentle sand beaches of southern China. Instead, it’s scattered with rocks and reefs, making the sea even more calm, vast and mysterious. Seashore, sunshine, mountains and forests… all of these make Dalian a paradise for tourists.

Dalian is also a good textbook of China’s modern history. Lvshun, the important military port located in southwestern part of Dalian, witnessed many vital wars in history such as “Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895″ and “Japanese-Russian War of 1904-1905 “. Many precious historic sites are still well preserved there.

With fast economic development during the past few years, Dalian has turned from a little fishing village to a modern international city. Countless skyscrapers and large shopping centers make it easier for people to live or to work here. The most important thing is the rapidly increasing GDP, while the environment is also well protected.

The local government spent about 1 billion RMB (about 127 million USD) to clear the rubbish on the surface of the sea and has made many other efforts for its environmental construction. Up till 2006, the green coverage of Dalian reached 45%. No matter where you go in the garden city, you can see green trees, grasses and colorful flowers. The air here is 100% fresh! People even joke of exporting the air from Dalian to other cities.

When talking about Dalian’s attractiveness, we can’t miss the squares, because the popular square culture reveals the spirit of the city: green and people-oriented.

Crowned as the “Northern Hong Kong” and the “Oriental Paris”, Dalian boasts of around one hundred squares, each with its own style and story. Zhongshan Square is a financial center of Dalian. The architectural style there is a combination of the oriental and the occidental, which well illustrates the city’s history.

Xinghai Square, or Star-sea Square, is once the largest square in Asia, covering 1.1 million square meters. The bronze sculpture of people’s footprints from their childhood to their senior years represents the long journey requiring patience and composure, which Dalian also went through. Walking around the open space, enjoying the beautiful scenery, you might not realize that just ten years ago this was a large garbage dump. Yes, it was, but today, with a group of buildings including the World Expo Center, the square has become a new international business district, which is really a miniature of the rapid advancement of the city over the past decade.

Zhongshan Square ( 中山广场)

Zhongshan square in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China, is the most famous of the many squares in Dalian, originally designed by the Russians in the 19th century. It is especially famous because of the several classical buildings located on the square, which were built during the first half of the 20th century by the Japanese.

The square was originally built by the Russians as Nikolayevskaya Square (in Russian: Николаевская площадь, meaning Nikolai’s plaza) in 1898. It was later renamed by the Japanese as Ōhiroba (in Japanese: 大広場), meaning the large plaza, relative to the smaller Nishihiroba (in Japanese:西広場 meaning the west square), which is now called Friendship Square (in Chinese: 友好广场). After 1945, it was further renamed as Zhongshan Square, after Sun Zhongshan(know in the West as Sun Yatzen), the first president of the Republic of China.

Zhongshan Square is 213 meters in diameter. Inside the five-lane round-about, there is a green zone and the paved area where people gather together to dance in summer evenings, participate in foreign language corners, or do other things. There are underground passages to the inside of the square from Zhongshan and Renmin Roads.

Ten roads come radially out of the square, clockwise:

Shanghai Road (Chinese: 上海路) – north

Minsheng Street (Chinese: 民生街)

Qiyi Street (Chinese: 七一街)

Renmin Road (Chinese: 人民路) – east

Luxun Road (Chinese: 鲁迅路)

Jiefang Street (Chinese: 解放街)

Yan’an Road (Chinese: 延安路) – south

Yuguang Street (Chinese: 玉光街)

Zhongshan Road (Chinese: 中山路) – west

Minkang Street (Chinese: 民康街)

Renmin and Zhangshan Roads are the main east-west artery of the downtown Dalian area. East of the square is Renmin Road, passing through the hotel area toward Haikang Square, near the Port of Dalian. West of the square is Zhongshan Road, passing through Frendship Square, Qingniwaqiao, and the City Hall, toward Lushun.

How Zhongshan Looks today:

Dalian Laohutan Ocean Park is situated in the central part of Dalian south beach. It’s the biggest modern scenic spot in China with a total area of 1,180,000 m² (about 291 acres) and a coastline of more than 4,000 m (about 13,123 feet). In the park, many attractive natural sceneries and magnificent man-made sights can be seen, especially the Tigers Sculpture Square and Polar Region Marine Animals World. Laohutan is regarded as Dalian people’s favorite park.

Tigers Sculpture Square

Covering an area of 15,700 square meters (about 4 acres), the square was designed in an irregular shape, not a traditional circular shape. The Tigers sculpture, designed by the famous Chinese painter and sculptor – Mr. Han Meilin, is the symbol of Laohutan Ocean Park. The sculpted tigers are 35.5-meter-long (about 116 feet), 6.5-meter-high (about 21 feet) and 6.5-meter-wide and took Mr. Han two years and nine months to finish this great work. Heading eastward, the six tigers are all different in shapes and sizes. They roar into the wind expressing their power as the King of Beasts. The Tigers Sculpture Square is the most beautiful and florid among many squares in Dalian.

Polar Region Marine Animals World

Polar Region Marine Animals World is now the only one that has the marine animals at best and one that most roundly exhibits the polar animals. On one hand, here you can not only see rare polar animals like beluga whales, sea otters, sea elephant and duckers that come to China for the first time but also other animals like cute dolphins, lovely penguins, polar bears and so on. In the 2,000 seat performance hall of the Aquarium, these animal stars give brilliant performances every day such as the gentle beluga kissing people and the dolphins’ exuberant acrobatic display to music. On the other hand, you can experience the freezing cold and the polar lights in polar environment, where you can touch polar bears and reindeers personally. At the same time you can also learn more about the polar ocean world.

Except for the above two, it’s definitely worth to enjoy the other scenic sites and entertainment facilities:

Coral Hall: The biggest marine life hall of Asia

Polar Hall: The world’s biggest and China’s only polar region marine animal demonstration and polar life experiencing hall

Birdsong Forest: The biggest national artificial birdcage with more than 2,000 birds

Ma Siji root carving art museum

Longest cross-ocean cableway

The biggest sightseeing ship of the south Dalian sea

4D theater

Jurassic Period exploration

Pirate Ship

Bungee-jumping

You can find all information on admission fee, opening hours etc. below.

Kieran: Established in 1984 to strengthen the works of conservation of Giant Panda habitats in the Jiuzhai Valley Nature Reserve.

Maxxelli blog: What kind of visitors do you receive?
Kieran: Vistors are nature lovers from all over China and the world. These range from young hikers from home and abroad, adventure travellers and older Chinese people who have been dreaming of coming here all their lives.

Maxxelli-blog:What can we do there?
Kieran: Many things:
• Nature holidays
• Site seeing
• Hiking and camping
• Learning about Tibetan culture
• Weekend getaways

Maxxelli-blog: When can we go there and how much does that cost?
Kieran: Jiuzhai Valley National Park is open 365 days a year and each season offers something different. Opening hours and entrance prices for the park differ according to the season. During the summer the park is a celebration of everything blue and green. The autumn colours have inspired many Chinese poets and during the winter, the park’s driest season the mountains can be a barron brown colour or a “winter fairyland” when covered in snow. Because of the destruction that fire could cause the region (most villagers still live in wooden homes) some trails and parts of the park are closed during the winter.
