The Shēngxiào 生肖, better known in English as the Chinese Zodiac, is a scheme that relates each year to an animal and its reputed attributes, according to a 12-year cycle. It is followed in several East Asian countries such as Korea and Japan.

The 12 animal’s appearance came from a legend that says that Buddha invited all animals to spend the New Year with him. Only twelve animals came and Buddha promised to give each year one of their names in order of their arrival which was the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.

If you don’t know what Chinese Zodiac animal you are, check this chart.

The Chinese zodiac exists since the Han Dynasty (2000 years ago). The Chinese zodiac has spread to all neighboring countries of China.

The Chinese New Year is celebrated at the end of January or early February. The Chinese calendar is not used to predict the future, but rather to get information on the character of a person, these talents…

In China, children are celebrated yearly on June 1. The whole country celebrates with cards, presents, special foods, parades, and other activities.

Although schools remain open, children do not attend class and are free of homework. Students participate in a wide variety of activities to strengthen allegiances to their country, have fun, and take part in, and join youth organizations such as the Communist Youth League.

The International Children’s Day is celebrated in numerous countries, usually on June 1 each year.

This day as it origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925.

Children’s Day is a time of festivity for Chinese youngsters. The occasion is marked by the Children’s Day Celebration honoring model students from around Taiwan and the Peoples Republic of China and by numerous parent-children activities sponsored by government and civic organizations. Thus, the day not only lets the kids become king for a day, but also helps to strengthen the bond between parents and their children.

International Childrens’ Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. Lucky kids!

Christian Bale has never been one to make conventional career choices. He dropped 75 pounds to play in “The Machinist,” then turned around and packed on 90 pounds to play a jacked superhero in the blockbuster “Batman Begins.” So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that in between collecting awards for his role as the emaciated, drugged-out ex-boxer in “The Fighter” and bulking up to wear the Batsuit for a third time in “The Dark Knight Rises,” Bale this time signing on to star in a Chinese blockbuster.

Bale will headline “Nanjing Heroes,” a WWII drama about the “Rape of Nanking”, from award-winning Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou. The film has a $90 million budget, which will make it the most expensive movie in Chinese history, where the most successful domestically produced film, “Aftershock,” raked in a worldwide box office gross of $90 mil.

Bale will play an American Catholic Priest who shelters a group of prostitutes and female students in his church during the Massacre of Nanking, a 1937 invasion in which Japanese soldiers stormed China’s then-capital and murdered and raped thousands of Chinese citizens.

Based on Yan Geling’s novel “The 13 Women of Nanjing,” the film will begin shooting in China in January, with roughly 40 percent of the dialogue spoken in English and the rest in Mandarin.

Kieran Fitzgerald from the Jiuzhai Valley National Park has agreed to share some more information about this place of immense natural beauty.

Maxxelli -blog: When was the Jiuzhai Valley National Park created and why?
Kieran: Established in 1984 to strengthen the works of conservation of Giant Panda habitats in the Jiuzhai Valley Nature Reserve.

Maxxelli blog: What kind of visitors do you receive?
Kieran: Vistors are nature lovers from all over China and the world. These range from young hikers from home and abroad, adventure travellers and older Chinese people who have been dreaming of coming here all their lives.

Maxxelli-blog:What can we do there?
Kieran: Many things:
• Nature holidays
• Site seeing
• Hiking and camping
• Learning about Tibetan culture
• Weekend getaways

Maxxelli-blog: When can we go there and how much does that cost?
Kieran: Jiuzhai Valley National Park is open 365 days a year and each season offers something different. Opening hours and entrance prices for the park differ according to the season. During the summer the park is a celebration of everything blue and green. The autumn colours have inspired many Chinese poets and during the winter, the park’s driest season the mountains can be a barron brown colour or a “winter fairyland” when covered in snow. Because of the destruction that fire could cause the region (most villagers still live in wooden homes) some trails and parts of the park are closed during the winter.

Youku has almost the same design and presentation as Youtube, excepted that the website is exclusively in Chinese. This very simple tutorial helps you to use Youku to watch your favorite videos.

Step 1: Use the research bar.

In the search bar (circled in green in the picture), write what you are looking for.

In our example, we are looking for the TV show Lost.

Step 2: Understanding the results.

The first line is the season number

The second line is the episode number

Step 3: Watch your video.

Just click on what you want and enjoy!
