Blue Marlin is a chain that has celebrated its tenth year of operation. Open from 10:30 a.m. until late into the night, food can be purchased from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. There is a wide ranging menu featuring several soups, salads, pizzas, some classic Asian dishes, as well as some internationally standard meals, and some German specialty dishes. Most dishes are well-stacked, it might sound a bit expensive, but the half roast chicken at 79 RMB and the pork cordon bleu at 69 RMB are just two of their delicious bargains! Kiddie meals are priced around 26-29 RMB , and during the daytime the Blue Marlin is decidedly child friendly, although it certainly becomes more adult orientated later in the evening.

The Blue Marlin venues often come with a pool table, TVs that provide coverage of most major sporting events, and a resident band plays nightly. The amply stocked bar serves Carlsberg, Tiger, San Miguel and Erdinger on draught, a wide range of spirits, and a reasonable selection of wines. Drinking at the Blue Marlin becomes particularly attractive between the hours of 4 and 7 p.m., when prices are halved on all drinks. After work drinkers, keen to take advantage of the happy hour, will be particularly enticed by the Long Island Iced Tea at only 24RMB and the regular draught beers that come in at 14RMB.

Taxi-Book is your handy guide to key locations in Tianjin and a way to communicate with locals.

The app is made to help you navigate through a city by listing its key locations and allowing you to get there comfortably. You just choose a location and show its name and address, along with an instructional phrase to a local taxi driver.

The app also features dialogue options for communicating with locals in their language: All phrases are written in Chinese and can be pronounced via Text-To-Speech Synthesis. Some phrases also feature likely answer options that the dialogue partners may choose as a reply. An English-Chinese dictionary containing more than 12,000 words can be used to fill gaps in some phrases.

http://www.yocoy.com/yocoy/en/taxi-book_index.php

The Taxi-Book app is a joint development by Taxi-Book and Yocoy who have combined their respective expertises in key areas to bring users this handy tool. This installment features Tianjin which is a metropolis in North China and one of the five national central cities. It is governed as a direct-controlled municipality (one of four), and is under direct administration of the central
government. More Chinese cities are soon to follow.

• Locations: More than 410 locations divided into 10 categories are featured.

• Locations come with detailed information like English and Chinese name, address, phone number, and GPS coordinates.

• View locations on Maps and find nearby places easily (requires online connectivity). You can also add your own locations, enter and save their data if you have discovered a new place that is not covered in the app.

• Once you’ve chosen a location, press the Taxi-Card button to bring up a simple yet effective page that allows you to tell a taxi driver clearly where you want to go. Show the page to the driver and shake the phone to make it pronounce the phrase with your desired destination.

• Taxi-Card: Choose between different color styles to customize the page to your liking.

• Dialogues: Special dialogues for use in a taxi situation like “Turn on the meter, please” or “How long will the ride take approximately?”

Taxi-Book is your handy guide to key locations in Suzhou and a way to communicate with locals.

The app is made to help you navigate through a city by listing its key locations and allowing you to get there comfortably. You just choose a location and show its name and address, along with an instructional phrase to a local taxi driver.

Link to the iTunes Store: http://itunes.apple.com/en/app/suzhou/id427780746?mt=8
(Or easier: Type “Suzhou” in the iTunes Store)

The app also features dialogue options for communicating with locals in their language: All phrases are written in Chinese and can be pronounced via Text-To-Speech Synthesis. Some phrases also feature likely answer options that the dialogue partners may choose as a reply. An English-Chinese dictionary containing more than 12,000 words can be used to fill gaps in some phrases.

The Taxi-Book app is a joint development by Taxi-Book and Yocoy who have combined their respective expertises in key areas to bring users this handy tool. This installment features Chongqing, a major city in southwestern mainland China with a population of 31 million. More Chinese cities are soon to follow.

• Locations: More than 330 locations divided into 10 categories are featured.

• Basic Phrases: For everyday situations to say things like “Hello”, “Thank you”, tell others your name or ask where the restrooms are.

• Favourites: Pick your favourite locations out of all the locations and add them to your favourites list for quick and easy access.

Introduction

Suzhou New District (Suzhou ND), formerly Suzhou National New and Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, was built in 1990 in the western part of Suzhou Jiangsu and renamed Suzhou ND in 1993. The park lies only 12 km from downtown. Its land area currently stands at 258 km2. The Suzhou New District Export Processing Zone was approved for development in the zone in April with a planned area of 2.7 km2.

It is only 90 km from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and 130 km from Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Suzhou is located 100 km from Shanghai Port, China’s most important deep-water port. It is 90 km, 70 km and 60 km respectively from the three main port areas of Suzhou Port, namely Zhangjiagang Port, Taichang Port and Changshu Port. The Grand Canal, Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Shanghai-Nanjing Railway, 312 State Highway and Suzhou-Jiaxing-Hangzhou run through the district. The Beijing-Shanghai Express Railway will shorten the driving time from Shanghai to Suzhou to 20 minutes after its completion in 2010.

Investment Climate

There are over 20 state and province-level development zones in Suzhou. Suzhou ND is viewed by some Singaporeans as a direct rival to China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park (Suzhou IP), as the latter was co-developed by the Chinese and Singaporeans. In fact, the competition between different development zones will force the zones to maintain their competitiveness so as to attract foreign investments.

Having undergone 15 years of development, Suzhou ND has grown into the fourth largest state-level high-tech park in China in terms of value-added industrial output in 2007. It accounted for 9% of Suzhou’s GDP which was RMB 52 billion in 2007, an increase of 11% over the previous year, while the industrial output climbed 11% to RMB 165.2 billion, making up 8.7% of the city’s total. The foreign trade value amounted to US$42 billion, accounting for 19.7% of the city’s total. Exports hit US$25.9 billion by the end of 2007.

Its major industries consist of IT, optical-machinery-electrical integration, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, and auto parts manufacturing industries. About 360 high-tech enterprises have located there. These firms have in total accounted for RMB 90.7 billion gross industrial output, contributing 54.2% of the park’s total.

More than 100 software developers have established themselves in Suzhou ND, generating sales revenue of RMB 8 billion. The BPO sector has generated RMB 4.5 billion in revenue. In addition, the auto parts manufacturing sector aims to achieve an industrial output of RMB 15-18 billion by 2010.

By the end of 2007, Suzhou ND had attracted a total of US$11.9 billion contracted FDI. The utilized FDI amounted 6.35 billion. The utilized FDI stood at US$2.1 billion in 2007 alone. It reflected a remarkably high concentration of Japanese investment, with FDI from Japan exceeding US$5 billion, accounting for 43% of the park’s total.

By the end of 2007, 1500 foreign enterprises had set up business in the park, including 53 Fortune 500 enterprises. In terms of investment breakdown, about 45% of investments fall into the IT industry and 30% into the precision mechanical industry. The major investors include Logitech from Switzerland, Asus and Acer from Taiwan, Canon and Seiko from Japan and Motorola and Timken from the U.S.,.

History

The Bookworm was born about five years ago in humble surroundings.

Its founder, Alexandra Pearson, was running a one-woman outfit in a modest courtyard where she not only managed a small library and put on low-key events, but also handled the restaurant side of things herself. The library had a meagre collection of 2,000 books – mainly biographies and non-fiction – that Alexandra had actually collated for another venture back in 1998…but that’s another story.

One day in 2003, a curious journalist walked in to have a look round and almost immediately became member number 2. He soon fell under The Bookworm’s enchanting spell and found himself lending a hand around the place; planting daisies in the courtyard, reshelving the books as they grew in number. Three years later, that journalist was to become The Bookworm’s Business Partner and Co-owner, and open The Chengdu Bookworm, and then The Suzhou Bookworm the following year. He is none other than Peter Goff, and today you’re as likely to find him writing the quirky questions for Chengdu’s quiz night as moderating a talk by a celebrated scribe in Suzhou.

The Beijing Bookworm still retains its original charm even though it has grown and now dwells in a much bigger habitat. It now has over 2500 members, with Chengdu at 800 and Suzhou at a rapidly growing 300. The Bookworm on The Bridge (Suzhou) and The Bookworm at The Yin Yang Centre (Beijing) have also recently opened their doors, so keep an eye on the site for details of all our new locations.Click on the links below to go the websites of the Chengdu and Suzhou Bookworms.

On the third Thursday of each month, you’ll find a cluster of people at The Bookworm admiring legs, inhaling bouquets, and gargling with various hues of ruby. Of course, some of them will be just plain old drinking the wine. The highly revered connoisseurs from ASC Fine Wines will talk you through each wine and its merits, and teach you to recognise grapes, years and châteaux. Very informative and the perfect opportunity to restock your cellar.
